We reject the regime’s repression, but foreign interference is not the solution
Global Jews for Palestine, a coalition of 25 Jewish anti-Zionist organizations across 20 countries, stands in unwavering solidarity with the people of Iran in their struggle for dignity and freedom.
Iranian people have taken to the streets in more than 100 cities, led by the working class, by unemployed youth and – crucially – brave women. They are responding to suffocating economic hardship, which is inextricably linked to devastating US sanctions and the targeted US – Israeli bombings of strategic infrastructure. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent himself admitted sanctions were intended to provoke an uprising. This US aggression has the complicity of other Western governments.
After turning off the internet to ensure secrecy, the Iranian regime responded brutally. Human Rights Activists News Agency now reports more than 2,500 people have been killed and nearly 20,000 detained.
We unequivocally condemn the Ayatollah regime’s brutality, as we reject their systematic oppression of women and their reliance on the death penalty. The Iranian people filled the streets because they want to chart their own future, and we support their right to freely determine their own path
Instead, we see the US and others trying to divert Iranian dreams to suit a neocolonial agenda, as they have done in the past. Partly for this reason, we denounce how the United States and Israel utilize “pinkwashing” and “feminist” rhetoric to justify interference. We remember that in 1953, the CIA (with the UK) orchestrated a coup against the democratically elected President Mohammad Mosaddegh. Today, they attempt to co-opt the people’s pain to install figures like the right-wing Reza Pahlavi. When Donald Trump tweets, “help is on the way,” he seeks a puppet state rather than liberation for Iranians.
Supporting the rebellion of the Iranian people does not mean siding with Netanyahu or Trump. Likewise condemning the genocide in Palestine does not mean siding with the Iranian theocratic regime.
We demand an immediate end to the repression of protesters in Iran. We reject any U.S. or Israeli intervention. .
For us, supporting the Iranian people is of a piece with our support for the people of Palestine. We condemn the exercise of imperial power and we stand for the principle of self-determination The path to a free Middle East requires the end of both local tyranny and foreign domination.
