Western governments are complicit with assassinations using systematic mass torture in Israel’s detention facilities.

Dr. Abu Safiya’s arrest and ongoing arbitrary detention without charges or trial – based on the abusive Unlawful Combatants’ Law – is a reflection of Israel’s systematic targeting of Palestinian health workers and the decimation of the healthcare system in Gaza in order to inflict conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction of Palestinians, a central aspect of genocide.
New information provided by Attorney Nasser Odeh, the lawyer representing Dr. Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, following his visit to Dr. Abu Safiya at the underground Israeli Rakefet interrogation facility in Nitzan Prison, indicates a severe deterioration in his condition to the point of a clear danger to his life. Dr. Abu Safiya bore fresh, severe injuries to his head, around his eyes, and on his ears and neck—to the extent that his lawyer initially struggled to recognize him.
During the visit, Dr. Abu Safiya experienced difficulty breathing and speaking continuously. He appeared extremely weak, struggled to sit upright without falling, and on several occasions seemed on the verge of losing consciousness. Attorney Odeh noted that he appeared frightened, exhibited severe psychological distress and was reluctant to speak freely for fear of being targeted. Based on these direct observations, Odeh concluded that Dr. Abu Safiya’s life is in imminent danger.
Dr. Abu Safiya reported to his attorney that shortly after his Supreme Court appeal hearing (which took place on June 10, 2026), while he was held in solitary confinement at Ganot Prison, four or five prison guards entered his cell and assaulted him with a hammer and batons, inflicting injuries across his body. He further detailed that since his transfer to the Rakefet facility on June 24, 2026, he has been subjected to daily beatings, resulting in several instances of loss of consciousness, but without receiving appropriate medical treatment.
It has become crystal clear that the State of Israel implements systematic torture, including rape, of Palestinian detainees and captives. We also know that more than 100 Palestinian detainees and captives, including teenagers, have died in Israel’s torture camps, with clear indictions of denial of medical treatment or of being tortured to death.
We must pressure all western governments to demand Israel for:
- The immediate release of Dr. Abu Safiya and all healthcare workers held in arbitrary detention.
- Immediate access to independent medical care and comprehensive medical examinations.
- Urgent inspection visits to the Rakefet detention facility by international and judicial bodies.
We call for international sanctions on the State of Israel. In particular, we call for resolute and committed support for the International Criminal Court (ICC) and other international mechanisms that can hold Israel accountable for the aforementioned crimes, and for the ongoing genocide in Gaza, as well as numerous crimes against humanity inflicted on the Palestinian people.
